St. Joseph Health System

St. Joseph Health System

In 1918, the great influenza epidemic impacted a young community of Sisters of St. Joseph that had only been established six years earlier. Sisters cared for the sick in their small community of Eureka, California and quickly realized they desperately needed a hospital. In 1920, St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka was opened and their healthcare ministry was born.

St. Joseph Health System, a not-for-profit Catholic healthcare system, was established in 1982. Its mission is to extend the healthcare ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange by continually improving the health and quality of life of people in the communities it serves. St. Joseph Health System strives to achieve its mission through strategic goals of Sacred Encounters, Perfect Care and Healthiest Communities.

St. Joseph Health System’s partners in mission provide compassionate care, promote health improvement and create healthy communities across California, as well as west Texas and eastern New Mexico. St. Joseph Health System’s four core values of Service, Excellence, Dignity and Justice, serve as guiding principles and shape the interactions with those whom they are privileged to serve.
